FACT: Every day the human body loses approximately a litre of body fluids through the skin Pores and mouth, as well as millions of skin flakes. They are all absorbed into your mattress and pillows.
Approximately 2 million dust mites can be living and breeding in your mattress and pillows. The use of a waterproof protector stops these particles from being released from the mattress and pillow, but better still stops any moisture getting into them. Without moisture the mould and bacteria cannot grow. The dust mite can only consume skin particles that have been broken down by this bacteria and mould.
Without the use of a waterproof protector it creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites (a major cause of Asthma, eczema and rhinitis.)
Note: It's not the dust mite that causes irritations but it's the faecal matter they leave behind. Every time you move on your bed a puff of dust is blown up and goes into your eyes and nose.
As many as 2 million dust mites have been counted in unprotected mattresses and it only takes 4 months for an unprotected new mattress or pillow to become infested. An unprotected mattress can become stained or damaged quite quickly as body fluids produced throughout the night passes through a non-waterproof quilted cover and creates a yellowish-brown stain where it has been absorbed into the pillows and top side of the mattress. Mattresses are also susceptible to many other contaminants. Waterproof protectors keep the mattress clean of the contaminants by securing it from absorbing body excretions such as sweat or other liquids resulting from spills.
There are a few types of waterproof protectors for your beds. A full mattress encasement protector completely encases the mattress and closes with a zipper. These protectors are recommended by doctors for people that suffer from asthma or allergies as the encasement will protect the top bottom and sides of the mattress which will prevent dust mites bacteria mould contaminating your mattress and pillows.
There is also the fitted or strapped waterproof protector. These protectors usually have a quilted cotton top or a terry towelling top. These protectors only protect the top side of the mattress but will prevent liquid stains and dust from penetrating the top surface.
Never use a new mattress or pillow without a waterproof protector on it as stains can build up very quickly. It only takes one single night sleeping on an unprotected mattress or pillow for it to become stained or damaged. Imagine you had bought a new mattress and used it on the first night without a waterproof mattress protector and became aware of something being not right or faulty with the mattress, if it has any stains or marks on it, then the shop you bought it from could refuse to exchange it. So as soon as you buy a new mattress or pillows always fit a waterproof protector on it straight away. Don't take any risks.
Mattress and pillow protectors come in all shapes and sizes to suit your particular needs. Whether it be to protect from bed bugs, dust mites, bacteria or just piece of mind knowing your mattresses and pillows are stain free and hygienic there's a protector to suit you.
